City of Strangers
Mixed Media Painting on Canvas
36 x 48 in
This artwork embodies the stark and transformative shift from the familiar warmth of Jakarta to the bold isolation of downtown Chicago. The interplay of contrasting colors and layered motifs reflects the tension between nostalgia and adaptation, comfort and challenge. The skull imagery symbolizes change and the rebirth of identity, while elements like the coordinates and text anchor the piece in both places and emotions. This is a visual narrative of resilience and rediscovery, capturing the essence of navigating two vastly different worlds.
Title: “Nostalgia”
Mixed Media painting on Canvas
36 x 60 in

This work addresses themes of nostalgia and the intersection of pop culture and fine art. The comic book style evokes a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, yet it recontextualizes these elements within a fine art framework. By presenting a traditionally "low art" form in a gallery context, the piece challenges viewers to recognize the cultural and artistic value inherent in comic imagery and popular iconography.

"506 Days of Summer"
I differentiated my position between villain and hero, Hansen and Summer, or Summer and Hansen. Winter began with my partner leaving to protect her feelings, while summer began with me leaving to protect mine. In some relationships, dynamics fluctuate; I can feel like Summer, then feel like Hansen, while she experiences the reverse.
Everything happens for a reason, even when it feels like a useless, emotionally draining mistake. In cases like this, it’s best to move apart to protect each other’s mental health and acknowledge the valuable life experiences we’ve shared.
In favor of my heart, this painting depicts the rollercoaster of feelings, emotional guilt, and delusion that come with ending a relationship or friendship.
"Don't Worry, New World"
"Some bridges are beautiful when they burn. There's a calmness that takes over when you can't go back when you've changed. When you've decided when you've left a version of you, that is no longer you, the end of everything is the start of anything."
After reading this quote I stumbled upon, I've learned to take what happens to the chest and not to the heart, as everything happens for a reason, and our lives don't stop when a minor or significant change happens. This painting is a daily reminder that tomorrow is a new morning with endless opportunities and possibilities for growth and that we should not stay stuck on the negatives of the past.
Don't worry, new world.

"Opportunity"

With this artwork, I aim to put out the message of how not everyone gets a fair shot at this game we call life, whether you don't get accepted to the university of your dreams while others do or whether you face your most challenging moments while others glee, life is never fair to anyone. One piece of advice I’ve received and kept with me ever since is, “It’s what you choose to do with the opportunities at hand, not what opportunities you are handed.” This quote is layered on my artwork “Live On,” which has my artistic intentions of making the most of life at its core and doing what you love, and not what you’re told to do, whether that would be making art, starting your own business, etc. “Live On” is the core piece of this artwork further pushes this quote and its meaning as making most of your opportunities and making most out of life are the two recurring themes with these two pieces of my artwork. With this, I leave a trail of motivation and inspiration for those who may feel they’re at their low points in life and may not know what to do next. This artwork perfectly captures the emotions I was feeling at the time of creating this piece as I look at this as a way for others in the same situation or similar to relate and hopefully use as a reason to keep going and to do what you want to do in life. - Andrew Tutupoly 2024
"Mindset"
"Your Mindset" serves as a visual metaphor for the impact of mindset on one's life experiences. The dominant skull symbol amidst chaotic scribbles and a bold palette underscores the theme of confronting fear, worry, and stress — emotions that can paralyze one's progress. Red strokes and unsettled doodles embody the tumult of anxiety, illustrating how a negative mindset can cloud and constrain our goals and perceptions. It's a reminder that the lens through which we view challenges can magnify difficulties or illuminate pathways to resilience and growth.
"Live On."
"Live On." reimagines the ambitious spirit of Napoleon's historical conquest through the lens of modern urban culture, merging the dynamism of street art and pop art with a historical backdrop. The quartet of mantras—"Make love," "Make Art," "Make Passion," and "Make Money"—encapsulates a contemporary creed, advocating a holistic approach to life that values creativity, affection, ambition, and financial success in equal measure. It's a visual conversation between the drive for historical greatness and today's diverse pursuits of fulfillment.
"Spontaneity"
I believe life offers abundant opportunities if we're willing to seize them when they appear. This painting captures the chaotic and spontaneous flow of my inner thoughts, reflecting my passions and creative projects through overlapping images and vibrant, expressive brushstrokes. My mind often buzzes with ideas, but only a few have been brought to life. Embracing opportunities, whether they lead to success or not, is essential—we can only discover their potential by taking the leap. Small passion projects, like starting a fashion business or exploring a new hobby like DJing, can open up unexpected paths in life. We only realize where they lead once we dare to pursue them.
"Coordinates of Self"
"Coordinates of Self" is an exploratory canvas that delves into the complex geography of identity. This piece serves as a
navigational chart into my soul, marked by the literal coordinates that represent Jakarta, a place that holds significance in my life. It is a visual manifesto of my discovery, where abstract forms and vibrant streaks of color collide to map out an emotional and psychological landscape. The enigmatic elements and cryptic symbols scattered throughout the composition invite viewers to contemplate the fluidity of self-perception and the multifaceted nature of human existence. The stark phrase "BEAUTY BEHOLDER," anchors the artwork, positing that the essence of beauty lies in the unique vision of the self. With brushstrokes made by people who have & had a significant place in my life, this artwork is not just a self-portrait; it is a dynamic journey through the layers of one's identity, challenging the observer to decode its depths and acknowledge the subjective beauty within the beholder.
